The Problem Statement

Despite Nigeria's economic potential, there remains high rates of illiteracy, youth unemployment, and poverty - especially among girls/women. This hinders national development. Skillful youths (Entrepreneur) have the ability to improve standards of living and create wealth not only for his/her self but also for the country by engaging in productive activities.

A rapid changing country like ours increasingly requires citizens to develop problem-solving leadership and technical skills. In order not to be left out in a competitive global environment, there is need to promote inclusiveness in that direction. Unproductive youths/women are In bondage of basic needs of life and they live in constant anxiety of when work will be available for them. Many of them are victims of crime, the ideology of terrorism, insurgency, banditry, armed robbery, kidnapping, poor health, depression and social unrest.

Key issues include

19 million children

Over 19 million children out of school (2023 UNESCO report), 7.6 million girls in Nigeria: 3.9million at the primary and 3.7million at the junior secondary level. More than 50% of girls are not attending school at the basic education level.

Gender Gap

High gender gap in literacy and school enrollment rates.

55% youth

55% youth unemployment rate.

37% of girls

37% of girls married under 18 years.

Rising number of destitute widows and orphans.

MAFOYENB aims to tackle these systemic issues through targeted interventions in education, economic empowerment and governance reforms.

Education Interventions

  • Scholarships for girls child and out-of-school children focused on all levels of education, from basic to tertiary education.
  • After-school literacy and numeracy programs for disadvantaged youth and girl-child.
  • School sponsorship - payment of fees, learning materials etc
  • Advocacy campaigns to promote girl-child education

Economic Empowerment

  • Promote the enrolment of youth & women into Vocational skills centers offering IT, fashion design, catering, crafts, agriculture training, carpentry, mechanics etc.
  • Seed grants to be awarded to women upon training completion to start enterprises
  • Revolving microcredit fund with low interest rates for widows/orphans

Governance Reforms

  • Policy dialogues and advocacy campaigns focused on education reforms
  • Lobby all tiers government on gender issues, child protection policies
  • Youth conferences to promote political participation.

The goal is to empower at least 50,000 youths and women within the first 5 years of operation, through multi-sector partnerships with UBEC/SUBEB, UNESCO, UNICEF, FME, NGOs, private sector and donors.
